Whenever next generation technology comes out there will always be a format war (the biggest exception to this was the DVD when the opposition to DVD were asked to join forces to create a single format). The largest war in modern times was VHS against Betamax, where VHS triumphed for many reasons. With increasing sales in high definition television sets and content, two new video formats for the home have come along against each other and a new war has broken out. Below are some of the points that will help you to come to a decision as to which of the formats you would like to move into in the Blue ray versus High Hefinition DVD conflict.
High Definition On The Up
High Definition content has been greatly rising in popularity, especially over the past two or three years as LCD and plasma television sales have absolutely skyrocketed, vastly increasing the demand for 720p and 1080p content. In the Blue ray versus High Definition DVD war, both formats are capable of displaying 1080p video. Also, they both offer many special features and bonuses, such as directly connecting to the Internet to find out more information about the movie and what went into making it. In the past in the Blue ray versus High Definition DVD toe to toe, HD-DVD’s were capable of displaying more special features but recent updates to the Blue ray format have leveled the playing field in this respect.
However, HD DVD technology is slightly easier than Blue ray to produce (the lasers and other equipment used in the process do not have to be so small), which results in initially lower prices, although Blue ray have started to catch up in this area recently taking great strides to bridge the gap. In the Blue ray versus High Definition DVD war, Blue ray has two things which really do give it an edge in its favor. First of all, all Sony Playstation 3’s come with the ability to play Blue ray discs. Its main competitor, the x-box 360, only has an HD-DVD player which is not required to play x-box 360 games but costs more money. With its support built in, the playstation 3 has enabled the Blue ray side to climb up finishing above the HD-DVD. In addition, a Blue ray disc is able to contain 50 Gb of data compared to an HD-DVD which can only hold 30 Gb. Blue ray currently holds many of the major studio exclusive movie titles but HD-DVD still comes in with a credible 30% share of these exclusive titles. Many people are therefore being vary cautious in their decision as to which way to go to upgrade their entertainment systems which is really slowing down the adoption rates of this new technology. Having said this it is expected that the Blue ray versus High Definition DVD war is expected to come to a conclusion in the next couple of years.
